A planetary gear motor (planetary geared motor/epicyclic gear train) is a combination of a planetary type gearbox and a DC motor with the features of speed reduction, high transmission efficiency, smooth power output, and high torque. In addition to their durability, planetary gear motors also provide higher efficiency than spur gear motors.

Brushless DC motors are typically operated at speeds of 2,000 to 3,000 rpm where they achieve excellent efficiency. If the motor is combined with a gearbox that has a 20:1 gear ratio, for example, this speed can be stepped down to 100 to 150 rpm with an accompanying 20-fold increase in torque. Planetary gears are characterized by their high level of efficiency; they also display a high power density in comparison to other types of gears, due to their compact construction.
